A 1:35 diorama base with a column

This base in 1:35 scale from Black Dog brings a section of paved ground with an architectural column. The resin casting is a finished compositional whole: the column gives the scene a vertical axis and at the same time serves as a support a figure can lean against or hide behind. It is not a kit of a building or a vehicle, but a scenic base to which you add your own figures and vehicles.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, so that no mold release agent is left on the surface, and let it dry thoroughly. Cut the casting remnants off, level the surfaces and sand with respiratory protection. A stone surface comes to life most with a coat of paint in several tones: a basic gray or sand base, a darker wash into the joints and a dry brush on the edges. Add dust pigments from below and a hint of rising damp, so that the column does not look freshly built. Paint the paving stone by stone in slightly differing tones; a uniform surface looks artificial.
