The set from SX-Art helps you cope with painting an aircraft on which the cleanness of the surface is part of the overall impression. The masks mark out the places that are to stay in a different shade and hold the edge where the modeler needs it. Masking by hand is particularly unpleasant on machines with smooth, flowing shapes, because tape has nothing to rest against in the sharp edges of the airframe.
The F-35A is the variant meant for conventional takeoff and landing from concrete runways and is the most widespread of the whole family. The design aims at a low radar signature, which shows in the canted outlines of the air intakes, the serrated edges of the panels and the weapons hidden in fuselage bays. The finish tends to be uniformly gray and so-called low-visibility, with the markings and the lettering only slightly different in shade from the surrounding paint.
With gray schemes the shade and the evenness of the coat matter more than contrast. Spray on a smoothed base, therefore, and try the paint out beforehand on an offcut. Leave the masks in place until the finish stops being tacky. Pick out the panel lines only after taking the masks off, otherwise the liner is drawn under the edge and the area stays blotchy.
