This bust from the Dynamo-Models range treats the figure of a French infantryman, and the year in the name is what determines the subject. In 1940 the French army looked different from the way it had two decades earlier and different from the way it would later in North Africa.
The fighting in the west began on the tenth of May 1940 and the French army entered it with equipment whose roots reached back to the First World War. The characteristic headgear was the Adrian steel helmet in the pattern of 1926, and with it went a khaki coat and leather straps and harness. The color of the whole kept to muted earth tones that differ noticeably from both the British and the German palette. Most of the rank and file of that time were reservists called up after the mobilization.
French khaki has a yellowish cast that is lost the moment you reach for a British shade. Mix your own tone with an admixture of ocher, therefore, and make the difference between the coat and the blouse by depth of color, not by another color. The helmet will stand a noticeably higher gloss than the cloth, because it was varnished. Leather straps matured into a dark brown with an uneven surface, so stains and scuffs look natural on it.
