Camouflage stencils and national insignia for the French Saint Chamond assault tank of the First World War, 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The French Saint Chamond assault tank drove into the fighting in the spring of 1917 and, with its conspicuously long hull overhanging far at the front, wrote itself in among the strangest machines of the First World War. The power was carried to the tracks by an electric transmission driven by a combustion engine, and the main armament was a gun of 75 millimeters caliber in the nose. In muddy trench terrain the overhanging nose dug into the ground, so the vehicle stood out for its firepower rather than for its mobility.
The hulls of these vehicles carried striking multicolor patches, on which the individual fields were often separated by a narrow dark line. It is exactly such a pattern that is hardest to imitate freehand: the boundary has to be crisp and irregular at once, which neither a brush nor free spraying manages. The set supplies the outlines of the individual fields and the national markings along with them, so the pattern is built up in layers and the modeler only changes the shade in the airbrush.
Eight to nine people were crammed into the hull, among them the driver, a mechanic at the generator and several gunners. The setting was more like an engine room than a combat vehicle: heat from the engine, exhaust fumes and a din in which the crew could communicate only by touch. Around four hundred of the vehicles were built and during the war they went through several modifications of the roof and of the observation cupolas.
First the lightest tone is laid over the whole hull, then the fields that are to stay are covered and you move to the next shade. The dark lines between the fields come last. It pays to work with well thinned paint, because there are many layers and each further one raises the risk of the edges rounding off.
Only the stencils are in the shipment. The vehicle and the coating materials are obtained separately by the modeler.
