The Browning heavy machine gun of 0.5 inch caliber, that is, 12.7 mm, is among the most widespread weapons of its class. American and Allied vehicles, ships and aircraft carried it, and in a number of armies it serves to this day. The empty cases left after it has fired are striking in their size, and a whole little heap of them piles up quickly at a firing position, so they belong among the rewarding details of a combat scene.
These are twenty cartridge cases for 1:35 scale, that is, for the same size in which vehicles and figures are built. Each is a separate part, so you can place them as your own idea of the scene requires: under the machine gun mount, into ammunition boxes, on the floor of a cargo bed or among the grass beside a vehicle.
Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little off the part and sand the remainder carefully. Wash and degrease the parts before painting so that the paint holds; choose the glue according to the material of the parts and the manufacturer's instructions. A brass shade suits cartridge cases, darkened afterward with a dark wash. Pieces lying on the ground for a longer time tend to be tarnished and dusty, while freshly fired ones stay shiny.
Builders of dioramas who want to give a scene a story will appreciate it. Scattered cases suggest that shooting has just been going on here, and they call for no intervention in the kit itself. They are rewarding as a small figural prop in the hands of a loader or at the feet of a crew as well.
