About product

Churchill Crocodile, a Tamiya plastic kit, 1:35 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Churchill Crocodile flamethrower tank in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The model combines the Churchill Mk.VII infantry tank with a flamethrower and with an armored trailer that carried the supply of fuel mixture and compressed gas. The coupling between the tank and the trailer moves both vertically and horizontally, and the maintenance hatch of the trailer can be built open with the tanks and valves rendered inside. According to the instructions the model can also be built as an ordinary Churchill Mk.VII infantry tank. Figures are usually included.

The real subject

The Churchill Crocodile was the flamethrower conversion of the British Churchill Mk.VII heavy infantry tank. In place of the hull machine gun at the front the tank received a flamethrower, while the fuel mixture and the compressed gas to drive it were carried in a towed armored trailer. The flamethrower had a range of tens of meters and was exceptionally effective against fortified positions, bunkers and trench defenses. Around eight hundred were built during the war; British units used them and the Americans, who had no flamethrower tank of this kind of their own, made use of them as well. The vehicle was one of the special armored vehicles for breaking through fortified defenses.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and fine-tune the running gear and the lower hull before closing and painting. Give attention to the movable coupling between the tank and the trailer, so that the combination looks natural. Enliven the British khaki (SCC) finish with panel variation and a gloss coat under the decals. Build the weathering with dark washes in the gaps, a dry brush on the edges and heavy dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the trailer.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of British equipment of the Second World War.
  • For fans of flamethrower tanks and special armored vehicles.
  • For builders of dioramas on the theme of breaking through fortified defenses.
  • For advanced modelers and for capable beginners.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
