A base for a diorama with the motif of a demolished building. It is among the most versatile scenes of all, because a ruin pins down neither a country nor a particular year and so adapts to most of the subjects you build in 1:35 scale.
Demolished buildings give a composition two things at once: a broken-up surface on which weathering can come into its own, and natural cover that makes sense of a figure or a vehicle. For photographing a model that is an advantage, because broken masonry forms a background against which the model separates better. It is also a scene where a mistake hardly matters, as a ruin takes irregularity, unlike smooth surfaces where every transition shows.
Start with a darker ground and add light from above, the way it would fall on masonry. Let a thin dark accent into the recesses and let it flow of its own accord. Build the dust and the fine rubble with pigments in two shades, one cooler and one warmer, so that the surface does not look as though it came from a single bag. Do the scorched places sparingly; black paint over a large area flattens a scene.
