Berlin building of the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries rested on a block system of tenement houses with a tall ground floor, ornamented cornices and vaulted archways into the yards. In the spring of 1945 it was the corners of these blocks that became key points in the street fighting, because they commanded two streets at once. The subject of a corner ruin is therefore among the most rewarding themes for a scene from the last weeks of the war in Europe.
A corner offers two directions of view, and that is its greatest strength. Place the vehicles or figures so that the two planes of the scene complete one another and the viewer has a reason to walk around it. Spread the rubble and the debris according to the logic of a collapse rather than evenly: material falls outward from the house and gathers at the foot of the walls. Period photographs of the city from 1945 are an irreplaceable reference for this work.
