A scenery material from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene for dioramas in 1:35 scale. The package contains two flat sheets of wooden shingles. It is not a finished roof and not a building kit, but a covering that you glue onto your own roof substrate yourself, whether that is a bought model of a cottage, a cardboard shell or a carved plaster ruin. A roof takes up a large area in a diorama and gives away most clearly whether a scene has been made honestly.
A shingle is a split or sawn wooden covering that for centuries roofed cottages, barns, hay barns, belfries and mountain huts here. It is laid in rows from the bottom up with an overlap, so that the joint of a lower row is always covered by a shingle of the row above. In time the wood turns gray, warps and individual pieces split or fall out, which is a rewarding motif for a modeler.
The roof substrate has to be flat and firm. Work from the bottom up, lay each higher row with an overlap across the joints of the one below, and draw guide lines in pencil between the rows, otherwise the covering will drift. Glue with PVA wood glue, which gives time to align things. Paint only once it is glued on: thinned acrylic paints or a wood stain in two or three close shades, applied irregularly shingle by shingle, give the roof a natural lack of uniformity. A dry brush in light gray brings out the edges, a dark wash draws out the joints, and in the valleys a greenish hint of moss suits well.
The material is supplied unpainted, for further work. The glue, the paints and the supporting structure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
