An injection-molded plastic kit of the Finnish BT-42 assault gun in 1:35 scale from Tamiya. The model faithfully captures the characteristic tall turret set on a slim, fast chassis. The package tends to hold photo-etched sheet, a cable and hatches that can be built open or closed, so the model offers an interesting and unmistakable subject.
The BT-42 was a Finnish improvised assault gun of the Second World War period. It came about by joining the chassis of a captured Soviet BT-7 fast tank with a newly designed tall turret, into which the Finns fitted an older British 114 mm (4.5-inch) howitzer of 1918. Only about 18 examples were built. The combination of a light chassis and improvised armament had limited effectiveness in action, yet it is a unique subject and a rewarding one for collectors.
Finish and paint the running gear, the large wheels and the lower hull before you close the hull up. Glue the plastic with thin modeling cement, and attach the photo-etched parts and the cable with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Over the primer, spray a Finnish camouflage; a three-color scheme is typical. A wash into the recesses will draw the detail out, dry-brushing will bring out the edges, and dust pigments on the running gear will give the vehicle its weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
