This is a diorama accessory, not a model of equipment. A scale model of a hand water pump represents a typical feature of a rural yard, a garden or a village green, that is the place where people went for water and where tools were washed. In 1:35 scale this is a small but striking object that gives a scene a clear focal point and at the same time explains how the place worked.
A pump is a rewarding prop, because it naturally creates action around itself. Set a figure with a bucket beside it, a puddle, wet ground, a cattle trough or a few ewers, and the scene starts telling a story of its own. It is useful in composition as well, because as a vertical element it breaks up a low flat base and the mass of a vehicle on the other side of the diorama can be balanced against it. It works well at the wall of a cottage, at the edge of a yard or at the entrance to a homestead.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, with the drop carried on the point of a toothpick. Spray a primer before painting. Cast iron and steel parts look best with a dark base, a fine hint of rust where the water runs down, and polished metal on the handle of the lever, which someone was always touching. The surroundings of the pump matter as much as the pump itself, so it does no harm to add damp soil, a puddle of heavily glossy clear varnish, green growth at the foot and water running in streaks down the concrete base. Dry brushing pulls out the edges of the casting.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, a base and figures are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
