About product

Leopard 1 A3 and A4 photo-etched set, 1:35 (E.T. Model)

A photo-etched metal set intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the German Leopard 1 main battle tank in the A3 and A4 versions, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but an aftermarket accessory. The metal parts replace plastic items in the places where injection-molded plastic is coarse for its thickness, that is above all the grilles over the powerpack, the covers, the fenders and their stiffeners, the loops, the clamps and the equipment brackets. The scope of the set follows the manufacturer's instructions enclosed in the package.

The real subject

The Leopard 1 is a West German main battle tank from the 1960s, built around a 105 mm rifled gun of British origin. The design put its money on mobility and reliability rather than on heavy armor. The A3 version was given a new welded turret with spaced armor in place of the original cast one, and the A4 version followed on from it with an upgraded fire control system and a new commander's sight. It is exactly the angular welded turret that makes these versions the most distinctive form of the type to look at. The combination of simple maintenance and scope for further upgrades kept the Leopard 1 in service with a number of armies for decades.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and level the remains of the tags with a fine file. Make the folds along the marked score lines, ideally in a photo-etch bender. Bend long parts such as the fenders gradually along their whole length, so that the sheet does not ripple. They are glued with thin cyanoacrylate; on large surfaces a slow-setting epoxy is safer. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer. Dusting with pigments and a wash then work well on the fenders and the loops, because sharp metal edges hold the emphasis better than soft plastic.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German and European postwar armor
  • Modelers who want to push the detail of a Leopard 1 model beyond the box
  • More experienced modelers with experience of working with metal
  • Display and contest builds, where the model is seen close up

This is an accessory photo-etched set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The package holds photo-etched metal parts only. The plastic model of the tank has to be bought separately.

According to the name the set is intended for both versions. Which parts belong to which configuration is stated by the manufacturer's instructions in the package.

Bend it gradually along its whole length in a bender or under a straight rule, never in one go at a single point.

No, ordinary modeling paints are enough. Degrease the metal first, though, and lay down a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold.
