1:35 German pigeons of war is a small Hauler diorama set on the theme of the military carrier pigeons of the German army, that is, an accessory for a scene, not a kit of a vehicle. It serves to bring a diorama, a display case or the base beneath a finished model in 1:35 scale to life.

The set from the Czech maker Hauler belongs among the small diorama elements that give a scene life. It is not a model of a vehicle nor a kit in its own right; they are small accessories meant to be placed on a base, by a building, by a vehicle or in the hands of a figure. It is precisely such details that decide whether a diorama makes the impression of a moment stopped in time or merely of a model stood on a brown board.
The carrier pigeon was an ordinary means of communication in every army of the First and the Second World War. A transmitted message could be intercepted and located, whereas a pigeon released from a forward position reached the appointed pigeon house with no radio traffic whatever. The birds were carried in wicker or wooden cages, were borne on the back on straps and were kept in permanent pigeon houses in the rear. Signal units used them above all where a cable line had failed or where radio silence was a condition. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject, because it brings a different scale of attention into a scene than equipment does.
Small elements have the greatest effect when they are not set out in the middle. Place them aside from the main object, so that they lead the viewer's eye. Before painting, wash and degrease the parts carefully and apply a thin coat of primer from a spray can or an airbrush - on a smooth surface paint holds differently than on the plastic of a kit. Feathers are well worked up by using a dark wash into the hollows after the base shade and drybrushing on the edges, which pulls the structure out. Add fine differences in shade between the individual pieces, as a group painted uniformly makes an artificial impression. Finally settle the set into the base, mask the gap with the material of the terrain and unify the whole ground with a light coat of dust pigment, so that the accessory does not look stuck on from outside.
