About product

Basic photo-etched set StuG III Ausf.G, late version, 1:35 (E.T. Model)

A photo-etched metal set in the basic range, intended for refining the detail of a plastic model of the German StuG III Ausf.G assault gun in the late version, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but an aftermarket accessory. The label basic set suggests that this is the main group of details for the hull and the superstructure, that is above all the fenders and their stiffeners, the covers, the grilles, the loops, the clamps and the tool brackets. The exact scope of the package follows the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The StuG III was a German self-propelled assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III medium tank. In place of a rotating turret it had a low fixed superstructure, thanks to which it was an exceptionally low machine and harder to hit. The Ausf.G version was the most numerous and the longest in production, carried a long-barreled 75 mm gun and did very well in the role of a tank destroyer. The late version differs from the earlier ones in a number of details, among them the cast gun mantlet, the reworked superstructure roof and the simplifications that wartime production forced through.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and level the remains of the tags with a fine file. Make the folds along the marked score lines in a photo-etch bender. Bend the long fenders gradually along their whole length, so that the sheet does not ripple. They are glued with thin cyanoacrylate; on large surfaces a slow-setting epoxy is safer. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer. The great advantage of metal fenders is that they can be convincingly dented or bent, the way damaged machines look in period photographs. A wash in the recesses and dust pigments on the lower areas prove useful at the end.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German Second World War armor
  • Modelers who are bothered by coarse fenders and tool brackets on a plastic model
  • More experienced modelers with experience of bending and gluing metal
  • Dioramas and display builds, where the vehicle is seen close up

This is an accessory photo-etched set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is the main group of details for the hull and the superstructure of the vehicle. Specialized accessories, for example the Schürzen side skirts, tend to be covered by a separate set.

No. The package holds photo-etched metal parts only. The plastic model of the assault gun has to be obtained separately.

They have a real thickness matching the scale and can be convincingly dented or bent, which is practically impossible in plastic.

Usually as you go according to the instructions and before painting, while the model is still easy to handle and finished paint is not at risk.
