About product

Hummel Sd.Kfz.165, early production, in 1:35 scale from Border Model

The kit covers the German Hummel self-propelled gun with the official designation Sd.Kfz. 165, in its early production form. 1:35 scale is the standard for models of military vehicles, so the model will fit without trouble among the other vehicles and figures in a collection or a diorama. Border Model has also released the late form of the same vehicle, so you can choose exactly the shape your scene needs.

The real subject

The Hummel came about as the answer to a simple problem: the artillery of the tank divisions needed a howitzer that could keep pace with the advancing tanks. The designers therefore joined the proven 15 cm heavy field howitzer to the Geschützwagen III/IV chassis, that is to a hybrid combining elements of the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks. The engine and the running gear come from the Panzer IV, the steering and the gearbox from the Panzer III. Over the chassis came an open-topped fighting compartment with the gun firing forward.

The vehicles were first used in numbers in 1943, and a version without the gun, for carrying ammunition, accompanied them, because only a limited supply of rounds could be carried in the Hummel itself. The early form that this kit covers differs from the later one above all in the treatment of the front end: the driver's cab is still separate and narrower, while the later machines received a reworked, continuous front.

Building and painting tips

With an open-topped compartment the interior is permanently on view, so paint it and weather it before you fit the side walls. Assemble and paint the running gear and the wheels separately, or you will not reach the lower surfaces later. Build the base with a primer, then spray the base shade and modulate it by lightening the upper surfaces. German two or three-color schemes spray well freehand at low pressure. After the decals and a gloss varnish comes the weathering: a dark wash into the recesses, wear on the edges, pigments on the running gear and fine dust on the horizontal surfaces. Rounds and equipment in the fighting compartment will bring the whole model markedly to life.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of German Second World War vehicles
  • modelers building a diorama with artillery
  • those interested in self-propelled guns and their development
  • those who want to use the open compartment for detailed work on the interior

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The most noticeable difference is in the front end of the vehicle. The early machines still have a separate, narrower driver's cab, while the later ones received a reworked continuous front to the compartment.

On the so-called Geschützwagen III/IV, that is a combined chassis that takes the running gear and the engine from the Panzer IV and the steering and gearbox from the Panzer III.

The exact breakdown of the parts is in the instructions with the kit; separately sold figures and ammunition sets in 1:35 scale can be added if need be.
