Italian fired roofing, two hundred pieces

The set offers individual roof tiles of the Mediterranean type in 1:35 scale. An Italian roof differs from a northern European one even at a distance: instead of flat shingles it is covered by a curved tile laid alternately face up and face down, so that the surface forms regular waves. It is precisely that profile that makes a scene from the south of Europe recognizable at first glance.

Where a roof like that belongs

The fighting on the Apennine Peninsula in 1943 to 1945 took place among villages with exactly this roofing: Monte Cassino, Anzio, Ortona. The same type of tile also belongs to the south of France, to Spain, to the Balkans and to North Africa, however, so the uses are far from ending with Italian scenes. Two hundred pieces are enough for a smaller roof, for a shelter or for a heap of fallen roofing at the foot of a wall.

Advice on laying and painting

Work from the bottom up with an overlap, so that the upper course always covers the joint of the one below. Do not level the courses deliberately to a tenth of a millimeter; slight irregularity looks more credible than a perfect grid. In color these are warm brick tones bleached by the sun, so a base in terracotta proves itself, with a lighter touch on the ridge and dark streaking in the valleys with a hint of green moss.
