The 1:35 Jagdpanzer Marder I photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard sharpens up a model of this tank destroyer with metal parts that plastic cannot be molded to match.
Responsibility details are not available.
A photo-etched metal set from the Czech company Eduard, intended for detailing a 1:35 model of the Marder I tank destroyer. These are etched parts, that is an accessory for a kit rather than the model itself. On open self-propelled vehicles etched parts pay off particularly well, because the fighting compartment is visible on the finished model.
The Marder I was a German tank destroyer of the Second World War, built on the chassis of a captured French tracked carrier. A 7.5 cm anti-tank gun was mounted in an open superstructure behind a sheet-metal shield. The design was conceived as a stopgap conversion of available equipment: a low chassis and a high-set superstructure with thin armor that protected the crew only against shell splinters and infantry weapons. It is precisely those thin plate shields and their edges that are inevitably oversized in plastic.
Etched metal is not bonded to plastic with solvent cement, which has no effect on metal at all. Cyanoacrylate glue is used instead, ideally in the thicker gel consistency or in a slower-setting form that gives you a few seconds to align the part. Put a drop on a piece of aluminum foil and carry it to the part on the tip of a wire: straight from the bottle the dose is unreliable. Degrease the bonded surfaces with alcohol and roughen the plastic underneath with sandpaper. On long straight parts such as fenders, apply the glue in sections and keep checking that the part lies flat. For areas where you want time to align things, a two-part epoxy is better.
The package contains add-on parts only. The kit itself, glues and paints are not included, unless stated otherwise.
