The M1070 is an eight-wheeled tractor of the US Army, the heart of the HET system meant for carrying tanks and other heavy vehicles over long distances. A chassis of this class has reserve that units used during long deployments for things other than towing a semi-trailer: machines with a cargo bed of their own came about, which suited moving bulk material in building and maintaining bases. Conversions like these look unusual precisely because they combine a civilian-looking body with a purely military chassis.
