1:35 M18 57 mm Recoilless Rifle is a resin model of the American 57 mm recoilless rifle in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Special Hobby.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory set for builders of American figures and vehicles in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle but a separate casting of the weapon, fitted beside a figure of the crew, on a vehicle or into a diorama as part of the equipment. A recoilless rifle has an unmistakable silhouette with its long barrel, so it catches the eye in a scene and at the same time places it in its period.
The M18 was an American 57 mm recoilless rifle introduced at the end of the Second World War and used in the following decade as well. Recoilless weapons are built so that part of the gases leaves to the rear and balances the recoil, which lets a light weapon fire a far heavier round than it could otherwise take. In practice that meant it could be carried and operated by a small team, or mounted on a tripod or on a vehicle. In period photographs it appears both in the hands of infantry and mounted on light cross-country vehicles.
The casting is small and long, so handle it carefully and never snap it off the casting block. Wash the set in warm soapy water first, otherwise the paint will not hold on the resin. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw and true the pad up with a file. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) in the tiniest drops. Before you start painting, check against the light that the barrel is not bent; slight bending in resin can be put right by warming it in hot water and straightening it as it cools. Darken the muzzle so that it reads as empty, and bring out the metal surfaces with a fine dry brush. Put the weapon in place only once the figure or the vehicle has been painted.
The set is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted, and glue and paints are not included in the package.
