A turret bustle rack extension for the M1A1 and M1A2 in 1:35 scale is a photo-etched set from E.T. Model. It adds an extension of the rack for crew equipment to a model; the tank is not part of the package.

A photo-etched set in 1:35 scale from E.T. Model with an extension of the bustle rack on the turret of the American M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tanks. The so-called rack extension enlarges the space for the personal equipment, crates and material of the crew, and it is a modification typical of vehicles in long deployments. The set holds photo-etched mesh and frame parts; it is not a kit of the tank.
The rack is made of wire mesh, that is of a material that cannot be produced convincingly in injection-molded plastic: a plastic mesh has thick sections and solid areas where there should be openings. Photo-etched metal is open and thin, so a finished rack looks like wire and the load inside shows through it. A loaded rack is at the same time the most prominent part of the rear of the turret to look at, and it changes the character of the model a great deal.
Bend the frames along the score lines and assemble the whole rack off the model first, so that it keeps right angles; check it against a rule. Glue the mesh areas with a minimum of cyanoacrylate applied on the tip of a wire, because any excess floods the openings of the mesh and the see-through effect disappears. Degrease the metal with alcohol and spray a base coat for metal before painting. Paint the rack separately, and only then fill it with the load and seat it on the turret. Inside, tarps made from aluminum foil or from two-part putty, crates and rolled canvas work well; a final layer of dust joins everything together.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
