A masonry niche with the statue of a saint, rendered in 1:35 scale by Black Dog. A sacred detail of the kind that belongs to European buildings and works unexpectedly strongly in a modeling scene.
A niche in a wall says more about a landscape than another meter of road. From it the viewer recognizes that the display is taking place in a particular setting, not just anywhere. It is also a vertical item, so it combines excellently with low models and with kneeling or standing figures.
Set the statue apart from the surrounding masonry with a lighter and smoother treatment; it comes out best when it has finer transitions against the rough wall. Weathered stone can be managed with a dark wash into the recesses and careful lightening of the edges. A deposit of dirt in the recesses and a greenish tone at the foot suggest that the item has stood in that place for a long time.
Masonry niches with statues belong to old European buildings; they stood by roads, on the corners of houses and in the walls of farm buildings. They therefore bring a geographical and a historical frame into a display without your having to explain anything. For scenes set outside Europe the motif is not suitable.
The other items of the display, the figures, the vegetation and the accessories, the modeler puts together themselves.
