A diorama ground with the motif of an outfall, that is the place where a drainage channel opens out into the open. It is a subject few people reach for, and that is exactly why it deserves attention: in a display case full of ordinary ruins and broken roads it catches the eye at first glance.
A drainage outfall joins two registers that rarely meet in one diorama. Concrete masonry with hard geometric shapes runs up here against the soft, dirty and organic element of water and deposits. A modeler therefore has room on a small area to show two different skills at once. The dark opening also works as a compositional trap for the eye, so the scene looks deeper than it really is.
Keep the opening genuinely dark, but do not use pure black on it; a muted brown-black looks better. Around the mouth, hint at continuous traces of seepage and deposits, which always run in the direction of the fall. If you are going to imitate standing water, apply it in several thin layers and let it dry thoroughly in between, otherwise it turns white. Create the green slime around the waterline at the very end.
You obtain the material for the water surface, the paints and the figures separately; the base is only the starting point.
