What photo-etching adds to a model

Photo-etched parts are cut out of thin sheet metal, so they reach a thickness that injection-molded plastic cannot manage. On a model of a tank that shows above all where sheet metal is supposed to be real sheet metal: on protective covers, grilles, tool brackets and other small parts which in a kit are necessarily thicker for reasons of manufacture. The set is worked for 1:35 scale.

The real subject

The Panzerkampfwagen IV was the most widespread German medium tank of the Second World War and it served from its beginning to its end. The Ausf. G form is among the versions armed with the long barrel of the 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun, with which an originally supporting machine became a full-fledged anti-tank weapon. Kits of this tank have come out in 1:35 scale in a whole series, so accessory sets are a standing item for it.

Working with photo-etched parts

The parts are joined to the fret by thin tabs. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting, or the part will buckle. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bending tool and always at the marked groove. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue laid on in the slightest amount, ideally with the tip of a wire. Wash and degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal surfaces, or the paint will not hold on the smooth sheet and will flake off while handling. With small parts it is practical to paint them before they are separated from the fret, because they are then much easier to hold.
