A special category of dioramas are those where we see into the interior only through an opening - a broken window, an open door or a hole left by a hit. The viewer catches only a section there, but that is exactly why the section has to be right, or the whole illusion of depth falls apart. Wallpaper with a printed pattern fills such a view safely and gives a scene the impression that a lived-in space really does carry on behind the facade. It works in a corridor, on a staircase and in a room that can only be looked into from outside.
With a view through a window work with depth: place the wall with the wallpaper a little way behind the opening, not directly against it. A space arises between the opening and the wall that comes across far more believably than an area glued straight onto the frame. Darken the interior against the exterior at the same time, because the inside of a building is always in gloom. Add a few small props at eye level - a piece of railing, an open door or a picture knocked down - and the scene will look as though it carries on further than it actually reaches.
