What the fence is for

A fence is one of the most useful elements on a diorama. It separates a scene from its surroundings, gives it dimension and tells the viewer where the action ends; without it, figures and a vehicle dissolve into an empty surface. A board fence with decorated edges belongs to rural and small-town buildings, to gardens, yards and front gardens, that is to the setting in which most scenes with a parked vehicle or a knot of figures take place.

How to set it into a scene

A fence rarely stands as straight as if drawn with a ruler. It pays to set some of the parts slightly out of true, leave one board out and sink the lower edge into the terrain, so that the fence does not rise from the base like a stage flat. A little taller grass along the foot and soil sprayed from below suit well, because that is exactly where dirt collects on a real fence. The decorated board ends also draw the eye upward, so there is no need to emphasize them with any extra color.

Painting tips

• Clean and degrease the parts before painting, as paint holds poorly on a greasy surface.
• Work from a darker base toward lighter touches, which gives the wood depth.
• Pull the pattern of the boards out with a wash into the gaps and a light dry brush over the edges.
• Grayed wood left unpainted for a long time is usually lighter than modelers expect, so keep the tone cooler.
• Choose the type of glue and a suitable primer according to the material of the parts stated on the packaging.
