In the first years of the war the PzKpfw III was the main German battle tank, and its versions differed mainly in their armor and armament. The Ausf H received stronger frontal armor in the form of an add-on plate and wider tracks, while the Ausf J received a single-piece front plate on the hull and in the later series the longer 5 cm KwK 39 gun. The unit 2. Panzer Division went through the Balkan campaign in 1941 and then moved to the Eastern Front, where tanks of this generation formed the core of its armament. It is precisely the divisional insignia and the numbers on the turrets by which the machines of a particular unit are recognized.
The turret numbers of the PzKpfw III are large and lie on gently rounded sides as well as on the rear stowage bin, so seat them one at a time and with plenty of time in hand. Level the base with a gloss varnish and check that no air is held under the film. The divisional insignia on the hull tends to be small and its correct position is hard to find, so mark it out with a pencil before applying it.
