Decals for the Centaur Mk IV of the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group in Normandy, 1:35 scale from Star Decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set of Star Decals keeps to one narrowly bounded theme: the support tanks of the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group deployed in Normandy. The bearer of the markings is the Centaur Mk IV, that is the version armed with a howitzer, not with an anti-tank gun.
The Centaur came about as a variant of the Cromwell with a different power unit and as a fighting tank it never really made its mark. The turning point came with the Mk IV modification, which put into the turret a 95 mm howitzer intended for destroying fortified positions. It was machines like these that the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group had at its disposal, whose vehicles supported the infantry advance with fire in the first days and weeks of the Normandy campaign. It was a short but technically striking episode, because the Centaurs served with the marines and therefore carried markings different from those of the ordinary army tank regiments.
The turret of the Centaur has relatively small flat areas and a great deal of riveted and bolted detail, so seat a decal onto a gloss base and press it down with a cotton swab so that the film follows the surrounding shape. Apply the softener in thin layers and let it work; do not push on the film before it has softened. The Normandy theme will take a more pronounced dust and mud on the running gear.
