A pole is an exceptionally useful element in a scene for two reasons. First, it gives the view a vertical axis that breaks up the flat impression of the board and lifts the composition into the height, so a vehicle stops looking isolated. Second, it establishes the setting at once: a row of poles along a road says that this is inhabited country, not a field in the middle of nowhere. It comes into its own in dioramas from the Eastern and the Western Front, in rural scenes, on the outskirts of a town and as a background for photographing vehicles.
A pole in a scene rarely stands perfectly upright and rarely in the middle; moved toward the edge and leaning slightly it looks more believable. If you run wires between the poles, make sure they hang between them with a slight sag, because a taut straight line gives away the artifice at once. The foot of a pole belongs with trodden ground, grass and perhaps an object leaning against it. If you are unifying the surface with the rest of the scene in color, allow for the fact that timber grays from the top and darkens with damp at the foot.
