The description basic means that the set covers the main external elements of the vehicle, that is the fenders, the grilles, the loops, the tool clamps and the small equipment, and is not aimed at just one isolated part. It is precisely on these parts that injection-molded plastic diverges most from reality, because in the mold it has to be several times thicker than the scale warrants. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an addition to one.
The ASU-85 was a Soviet tracked self-propelled gun developed for airborne units, which needed an anti-tank weapon transportable by air. The vehicle has a low enclosed superstructure without a rotating turret, with an 85 mm gun mounted in the front wall, and it is built on a lightened tracked chassis. The low silhouette and the light construction were paid for with weak armor, so the machine relied on firing from cover and changing position quickly. It served with Soviet and allied airborne units for several decades.
Start with the fenders and the large areas and leave the fine grilles until the end. Cut off the plastic parts that the photo-etch replaces and sand the surface flat. Make the bends in a bending tool, and bend the small parts between the jaws of flat pliers. Degrease the metal with alcohol and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue, and on long edges with epoxy. A base coat for metal is compulsory. Soviet equipment is often painted in a uniform green shade, on which the detail disappears on its own, so it pays to work with lightening the centers of the surfaces, a dark wash in the recesses and drybrushing on the edges. The lower areas and the fenders will take pronounced dust and mud effects.
This is an accessory photo-etched set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
