An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet KM-4 aerosan in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. Aerosans are a rare subject in modeling, so the model will bring something else to a display case or a winter diorama than another tank or truck. At the same time 1:35 scale allows the model to be combined with ordinary figures and diorama accessories.
Aerosans were a widespread solution to transport in deep snow in the Soviet Union, where wheeled and often tracked equipment lost its ability to get through. The design rests on a light body seated on skis, with an engine and a pusher propeller at the rear. The drive does not depend on the friction of wheels or tracks against the ground, so the vehicle slides even over snow-covered terrain without roads. During the war aerosans were used for liaison work, reconnaissance, carrying the wounded and supplying units in northern and forested areas; light transport as well as armored fighting versions existed. The KM-4 type belonged to the lighter designs of this kind.
The skis and their mounting are the crucial part. Glue them on a flat surface and let them cure thoroughly, otherwise the finished model will rock. Keep the propeller and the engine mount separate for as long as possible, as they are easier to paint that way and you will not damage the blades. The typical finish is winter white, which looks best when you lay it on thinly and unevenly over a darker base, or use a chipping technique, so that the original shade shows through. Snow and mud effects belong on the skis and on the underside of the body, and lighten the edges and corners slightly. The model will benefit greatly from a snow-covered diorama base with a track cut through it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
