This set of Star Decals in 1:35 scale carries the markings of the Soviet BTR-70 armored personnel carrier in the Afghan deployment. The package holds the markings alone, for a finished model, not a kit.
The BTR-70 is an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier with an amphibious hull, introduced in the 1970s as the successor to the older BTR-60. In a small turret it carries a 14.5 mm heavy machine gun and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. The design allowed for fighting in open terrain, but in Afghanistan its weakness showed: the narrow side openings between the second and third axles made it hard to leave the vehicle quickly, and so the soldiers often rode on top of the hull. The deployment of the wheeled carriers concentrated on escorting convoys and patrolling the road routes.
The hull of the BTR-70 is rounded along its whole length and there are practically no continuous flat areas on it. Divide longer lettering, then, and seat it in parts, so that the film does not wrinkle. Around the headlights, the hatches and the grab handles, level the surface beforehand with a gloss varnish. Once it has dried, matte the model down and only then add the dust deposits on the fenders and around the wheels.
