A small collector kit of the historic Spencer motorcycle of 1906 in 1:35 scale from the Czech label Black Dog. The manufacturer offers it as a product of 3D printing, which on so small an object makes sense: the thin frame tubes, the handlebars and the spokes of the wheels cannot be captured faithfully in this scale other than by printing. Given the nature of the material and the size of the parts, the kit is suited rather to more experienced modelers than to complete beginners. The motorcycle works well as an object on its own on a shelf and as a striking element of a diorama.
Spencer is among the founding names of Australian motorcycling. David Spencer made his machines in Brisbane in the first decade of the twentieth century and, unlike most workshops of the time, which only joined an imported engine to a local frame, he made practically the whole machine himself. The 1906 model was powered by a single-cylinder engine of about 475 cubic centimeters, the power was carried to the rear wheel by a belt and the brake pressed a block directly onto the rim. Spencer collected awards with his motorcycles at track races and in hill climbs. Only a few of them have survived and they are among the most valuable exhibits of Australian technical history.
Wash the parts first in lukewarm water with a detergent; that gets rid of the remains from production and the paint then holds considerably better. Cut the supports and the print remnants away with a sharp blade or a saw, not with pliers, as printed material is more brittle than plastic. Do the sanding with your airways protected, best of all wet. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting; the frame will bear a deep gloss black, and the metal parts are worth setting apart with a dark steel shade and gentle polishing of the edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
