About product

Eduard 1:35 StuG IV zimmerit, a surface finish set for 1:35 scale

An accessory to a model, not a kit. The set deals with one of the most demanding surface finishes on models of German hardware: Zimmerit. Instead of applying and scoring putty by hand, where one hesitation is enough for the pattern to go astray, parts with a ready-made pattern, cut to the shape of the particular panels of the vehicle in 1:35 scale, are applied to the surfaces of the model. The result is regular across the whole area and is manageable even for a modeler who does not feel up to filling by hand.

What Zimmerit was

Zimmerit was a paste-like compound applied to the vertical surfaces of German vehicles in the second half of the war. Once dry it formed a thick layer with a pronounced scored pattern, which differed between individual types of vehicle as well as between production series. On a model it is a highly conspicuous element: it covers most of the visible surface and determines how both the paint and the weathering look.

Building and painting tips

Before application, degrease the surfaces of the model and try the parts dry to check that they sit on the edges of the panels. Proceed surface by surface rather than all at once, as one surface seated crooked spoils the continuity of the pattern onto the neighboring one. Fit tools, brackets and other small items only after the surface is finished, as it is hard to work around them. Always prime Zimmerit so that the further coats hold. When painting, count on an intricate surface behaving differently from smooth plastic: apply the covering paint in thin coats so that the pattern is not flooded, and when weathering make use of the fact that the grooves catch a wash and dry pigment far more readily than a flat surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models of German hardware in 1:35 scale with a Zimmerit surface finish
  • Modelers who do not want to risk applying and scoring putty by hand
  • Those who build a cabinet model and want an absolutely regular pattern
  • More experienced builders: seating the parts on the panel edges calls for care

This is an accessory for modelers, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A paste-like compound applied to the vertical surfaces of German vehicles in the second half of the Second World War. Once dry it formed a thick layer with a pronounced scored pattern.

The material is not stated here. The form is given by the manufacturer on the box; choose the matching glue accordingly.

In the result, yes: the pattern is regular across the whole area. The difficulty moves to seating the parts accurately so that the pattern continues across the panel edges.

Before fitting the small fittings and before painting. It is hard to work on the surfaces around brackets and tools that are already fitted.
