It is an accessory that replaces the plastic barrel from the base kit: the metal version has a perfectly round section, a precise muzzle and clean outlines with no mold seams, which raises the realism of a finished model markedly.
Degrease the metal surface before painting and apply a primer suited to metal, so that the paint holds well. The part is fitted into the mount in place of the plastic barrel; use super glue to hold it. Glue any small metal extras in the set with super glue as well.
