Stencils for the splinter camouflage pattern of the Terminator II tank support fighting vehicle in 1:35 scale, after the machine from the KADEX 2014 show.
Responsibility details are not available.
The idea of escorting tanks with a vehicle that would protect them from infantry carrying antitank weapons came out of painful experience from fighting in cities. The result was a machine armed with a pair of automatic cannons, grenade launchers and launcher containers for guided missiles, built on the chassis of a main battle tank. The second generation lightened the turret and simplified the crew, doing away with both of the forward gunners in the hull. It was in this form that the vehicle was presented at the arms exhibition in Kazakhstan in 2014, where it appeared in a striking hard-edged finish.
The term splinter describes a camouflage made up of sharply bounded polygons that flow across one another without a single soft transition. The pattern comes from aircraft schemes of the Second World War, and it returned to armored vehicles precisely on show and parade machines, because it optically breaks up the outline of the machine.
A hard-edged pattern stands or falls on whether the vertices of the polygons meet exactly where they should. When two edges miss each other by half a millimeter, a thin strip of the base color appears between the fields and ruins the whole impression. Cut film has its angles set by the subject and the vertices fit into one another, while cut tape calls for dozens of separate cuts and each one adds its own deviation.
This method makes demands of its own, though. The vehicle is densely set with handles, containers and screens, so large areas of film have to be divided and the individual pieces pressed carefully against every obstacle.
