Holders for spare track links in the later rendering for the heavy tank Tiger I. They replace the coarsely shaped brackets from the kit and allow the links to be hung with a gap you can see through. 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The crews of the Tiger I carried spare track links on the sides of the hull and on the front of the turret. It was not merely a reserve in case of a break: the layer of steel worked at the same time as added protection and changed the outline of the machine. Period photographs can be sorted by their arrangement, because every unit grew used to stowing them a little differently.
The brackets were transformed during production. This set belongs to the later shape; for the older one the brand lists a separate number. The difference is unobtrusive, but on a model it decides whether the detail matches the version of the machine you are building. It is checked most easily from a photograph of one particular car or from the instructions for the kit.
An injected bracket tends to be more massive than the scale would warrant, and not seldom it comes out of the mold as a single block together with the links. A separate casting allows the links to be hung apart and air left between them. The side of the hull comes alive that way, because the eye catches on just such gaps and on the shadow beneath them.
Track links are not included; the parts from the kit are counted on, or a metal track obtained separately. The brackets are glued onto a hull already painted, otherwise it is hard to get a brush underneath them. The contact faces of the links are then mixed from a dark brown with a drop of orange. Before gluing, lay out where the row of links is to begin and end, so that neither a tool nor a grab handle cuts through it; rearranging a finished run is only possible by breaking it off and sanding the paint back.
