This set from the Czech maker Black Dog is an accessory for a scene, not a model. It contains resin castings of the clothing and personal equipment of soldiers of the American army from the period of the Second World War in 1:35 scale. It is exactly these small items that make the difference between equipment that looks freshly out of the mold and a machine somebody uses every day: folded and discarded pieces of clothing on a fender, thrown over a turret or stacked in a cargo bed immediately reveal that people have been moving around the model.
Most often the castings are placed on fenders, engine decks, bins and racks on tanks and armored vehicles, in the cargo beds of trucks, on a pile of equipment by a trench or in the rear area of a field camp. They also work well as a compositional element, because a bundle in a contrasting color breaks up a uniform area of olive paint and draws the eye to the place you want to show the viewer.
Wash the castings first in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed, because otherwise the paint will hold poorly. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and sand the surface, best of all wet and with your airways protected. Resin is bonded with super glue; ordinary modeling cement for plastic does not hold here. Before painting, lay down a primer, then acrylic paint over the whole area and finally an oil glaze or a wash that runs into the folds. A dry brush on the highest points gives the fabric softness.
