US special forces in Afghanistan set 1:35 from Black Dog brings several figures at once, so a whole group scene comes out of one purchase.

A multi-figure set in 1:35 scale from the range of the Czech maker Black Dog. According to the name it is a group of members of US special forces from the Afghan deployment. Compared with a single figure, the set solves the hardest thing about a group scene, namely getting the figures to belong together both in looks and in story.
A group follows a different logic on a diorama than a lone figure. The viewer automatically imagines a relationship between the people, and so spacing, the way the bodies are turned and the direction of the gazes all decide the result. A proven approach is not to line the figures up in a row: two closer together, a third to one side, so that an irregularity arises. If you are building a halt in a column in open country, leave more space between the figures; that widens the scene visually.
The biggest mistake with sets is painting every figure in exactly the same shade. Keep the base shared, but shift it a shade differently on each figure, give one more fading and another more dirt on the knees. The group then looks like people rather than production castings. Unify the dust effects, by contrast, because they all stood in the same terrain, and that ties the scene together.
