Cigarette crates from the American supply network of the Second World War, made as laser-cut wooden parts. The package matches the first of the construction types distinguished for this crate.
Responsibility details are not available.
Tobacco was one of the items in a wartime ration that people waited for. The transport crate therefore traveled to the very end of the supply chain and appeared everywhere rations were handed out: at a field kitchen, on a truck bed, by a command tent and thrown away empty behind a building. That is exactly why it is a rewarding element of a scene, even though it takes up barely a few millimeters itself.
This package is neither resin nor plastic. The parts are cut from thin wooden veneer and that changes everything, starting with preparation. Veneer has a growth-ring grain of its own and at one to thirty-five that grain is in fact oversized, because a grain cannot be scaled down. A deeply stained finish therefore reads more like a plank than like a thin board, and it is more convincing to cover the surface in thin coats and let the texture only show through.
A laser beam does not cut wood but burns it away, so the edge stays darkly scorched. That darkened line can serve as a shadow in a joint, but on a top surface it gives away that it is a cut. Anyone who wants clean edges runs fine abrasive paper over them. Wood also glues differently from a casting: it absorbs PVA glue and the joint holds firmly, whereas super glue goes brittle on a porous surface and soaks through as a dark stain.
The parts are taken out of the carrier by cutting the tabs, they are dry-fitted butt to butt and only then is the surface sealed with a thin primer. Without sealing, the wood will draw water-thinned paint in unevenly and the crate will warp.
