The decal set is intended for a model of the American five-ton truck M54, on whose bed the tub of an M113 carrier served as armored superstructure. According to the name it is the vehicle nicknamed THE COLONEL, and in the red form. The color version is part of the name because the same vehicle also appeared in another form and the markings differ between them. The model is not included in the package.
Gun trucks were not born on a drawing board but out of necessity. American transport units in Vietnam drove roads where convoys faced ambush, and because escorting armored vehicles were few, the crews began to build protection themselves. Steel plates, sandbags and machine guns went onto the chassis of an ordinary truck, and on some examples a whole tub from an armored personnel carrier. Every vehicle was different, got a name of its own painted on the side, and the crews took pride in the result. It is exactly this handmade variety that makes gun trucks a rewarding modeling theme.
The lettering belongs on the armor plates, so first settle exactly where the plates will go on the model and apply the markings only onto the finished assembly. Large lettering calls for a flat, smooth base, otherwise silvery patches will appear in the letters. A gloss varnish laid on only in a strip under the lettering will help. Hand-painted letters tended to be uneven in strength, which you suggest with a gentle toning down over the matte varnish at the end.
