A kit of the British Welman midget submersible craft in 1:35 scale from the maker Mikromir. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. For such a tiny subject the 1:35 scale is the ideal compromise: the model stays compact, but at the same time it carries detail and can be completed with a figure or terrain from the standard range for ground vehicles.
The Welman was a British single-seat underwater craft developed during the Second World War. It was a very small vessel with a hull in the shape of a closed cylinder, operated by a single man seated in the forward part under a low tower. The pilot had no conventional periscope, only a small window, which fundamentally limited his orientation under water. The craft had no torpedo tubes; instead it carried a charge in the forward part that could be detached. The designation W10 refers to one particular example from the series built.
A compact hull offers few places to hide a seam, which makes it all the more worth giving time to the mating surfaces and their leveling before gluing. Fit the window and the tower only once the hull is painted; small clear or glossy parts are hard to mask. Because the subject is small, work the surface rather gently: a coarse wash and a heavy patina will optically shrink the model and blur the shape. A fine grading of the shade on the upper and lower parts of the hull, by contrast, will give it volume. The model gains a great deal from context; a figure in the matching scale, a piece of wooden jetty or a transport cradle tells at once how small the craft really was. On a stand without context it gives the impression of a larger vessel, which with this subject is misleading.
