A resin set of wheels in 1:35 scale for the British Austin K2 truck of the period of the Second World War, and in the form with balloon tires and a tread pattern of the Goodyear brand. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory with which you replace the plastic wheels supplied in the box. The balloon form and the tread pattern are at the same time the features by which the set differs from sister sets for the same vehicle.
Balloon tires have a greater volume and run at a lower pressure, so they spread more and behave better on soft ground, in sand or in mud. On a model you will recognize them by their markedly more bulbous shape and coarser pattern than ordinary road tires have. The wheel is cast with loaded deformation, the contact area is flattened and the sidewall bulged, as though a loaded vehicle were standing on it. It is precisely with balloon tires that this effect is pronounced, and a plastic wheel from the box will never capture it.
The Austin K2 was a British truck, best known in the form of the K2/Y heavy ambulance. The vehicles served with British units throughout the war, and use across country and in the desert led to wider tires with a coarser pattern being fitted. The choice of tires therefore determines not only the look of a model but also the setting you place it in.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, otherwise the release agent from the mold will make it impossible for the primer to adhere. Cut the casting block off with a thin saw, finish the cut with a scalpel and level the area with a file, and do the sanding wet and with protection for your airways. Glue resin with cyanoacrylate glue. The coarse pattern of a balloon tire directly invites a patina, so rub dust pigments into it and apply mud effects to the contact area.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The basic kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
