This set from Voyager Model holds photo-etched parts for the armor of the open superstructure of the German self-propelled gun that came about by seating a heavy 150 mm infantry gun on the chassis of the Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.B light tank. It is not a kit but an accessory for the Dragon 6259 plastic kit.
The abbreviation Sf stands for Selbstfahrlafette, that is a self-propelled mount. The vehicle came about in the early 1940s as an improvised way of getting a heavy infantry gun moving; the gun, complete with its wheeled carriage, was seated on the chassis of a light tank and protected by a tall superstructure of sheet plate, open at the top. Only a few dozen examples were built. The vehicle was heavy and tall, with limited mobility, and in modeling practice it is prized precisely for its unusual appearance. The nickname Bison came to be used for it.
The superstructure is made up of large flat surfaces, where every deviation is noticeable. On sizeable photo-etched parts a slow-setting two-part epoxy or a thicker cyanoacrylate works better than a thin one, because it gives time to align them and leaves no white bloom on a large surface. Build the corners of the superstructure on a square or against a precisely cut block, so that the walls meet at a right angle. Before the final gluing, assemble the whole superstructure dry and mark out the order of the parts with a helper. At the joints between plates it pays to suggest rivets or welds only after assembly, when it is clear exactly where they sit.
This is an add-on set for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
