A basic set of photo-etched parts in brass sheet for a plastic model of the Pz.Kpfw.IV tank in the Ausf.J version in 1:35 scale. It is a detailing accessory to a kit under construction, not a model of a vehicle. The set deals with the places where injection molded plastic is inherently too thick, or where it can only suggest a shape.
The Ausf.J is a simplified late version in which a number of parts were made more economically and more angularly. The most conspicuous target for photo-etched metal is the upper surface of the hull: the mesh above the engine compartment and above the radiators is made of cut sheet and screen on the real vehicle, through which you can see into the innards. An injection molded kit can only manage them as blind relief, so seen from above the surface looks as if it were drawn on. A photo-etched mesh is really cut through, and when it is fitted correctly a dark space appears beneath it — and that is a difference even a layman sees on a finished model. The same goes for the thin rims and covers on the edges of the upper plate.
The mesh is the thinnest part in the whole set and the easiest one to ruin. Never grip it with tweezers in the middle of the surface — the dent that results can no longer be straightened. Take it out of the fret, lay it on glass and run a flat tool lightly over it, so that it is perfectly flat. Apply the glue only around the perimeter, on the frame of the opening in the model, never in the middle; a drop in the middle of the mesh will creep into the holes and blind the surface, that is exactly the opposite of the effect you are buying photo-etched metal for. Paint the space under the mesh matte black before fitting, so that the shadow looks deep. When spraying the final color, hold the airbrush farther away and spray thinly, otherwise you will clog the holes with paint.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
