About product

Photo-etched Schürzen for the StuG III Ausf.G, late version, 1:35 (E.T. Model)

A photo-etched metal set aimed at the Schürzen side skirts and their hangers for a plastic model of the German StuG III Ausf.G assault gun in the late version, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle, but a specialized aftermarket accessory that deals with one particular item which is at the same time very prominent to look at. The set usually covers the skirts themselves, the carrying rails and the hangers; the exact scope follows the manufacturer's instructions in the package.

The real subject

Schürzen are thin protective plates hung along the sides of the vehicle. Their task was to catch a hit, or to detonate it prematurely, that would otherwise have landed on the relatively thin side armor of the hull. On assault guns and on tanks of the Panzer III family they became standard equipment on the later machines. In practice the plates were often lost, bent and fell off, so period photographs show vehicles with an incomplete or buckled set, which is a rewarding detail for modelers.

Building tips

It is exactly on the protective plates that photo-etched metal proves itself most. Plastic Schürzen tend to be unconvincingly thick because of the molding process, whereas metal ones have a thickness matching the scale. On top of that you can convincingly dent them, bend them over an edge or tear them, and leave some out altogether, which makes the model look at once like a machine after a long spell of service. Cut the parts out with a sharp scalpel, make the folds along the marked score lines and glue them with cyanoacrylate, preferably one hanger at a time. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth sheet. Scuffed areas and rust then come out best of all on the plates.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German Second World War armor
  • Modelers who want realistically damaged or incomplete side plates
  • More experienced modelers with experience of working with metal
  • Dioramas where the model is seen from the side and close up

This is an accessory photo-etched set. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Thin protective plates hung along the sides of the vehicle. They were meant to catch a hit aimed at the side armor of the hull, or to detonate it prematurely.

Yes, that is the point of it. Metal plates have a thickness matching the scale, whereas molded plastic ones tend to be markedly thicker.

No. These are photo-etched metal parts only. The plastic model of the assault gun is obtained separately.

Dent the metal carefully with a blunt tool on a soft surface, bend an edge with tweezers and feel free to leave some of the plates out. An incomplete set was common in period photographs.
