About product

Schürzen side screens for the StuG IV, 1:35 (Voyager Model)

A photo-etched add-on set from Voyager Model, tied to a model of the German StuG IV assault gun in 1:35 scale that you already own. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a set of brass parts for the side armor screens and their hangers. Plastic screens tend to be markedly oversized in this scale, and brass moves them closer to the real sheet thickness. The set is cut for the Dragon kit.

The real subject

The StuG IV was a German assault gun of the Second World War. It came about by combining the superstructure of the StuG III assault gun with a 7.5 cm gun and the chassis of the Panzer IV tank, and it was built from the end of 1943. It served for direct fire support of infantry and for fighting armored vehicles. The side screens, in the designation of the period Schürzen, were thin steel plates hung on a bar structure above the running gear. They protected the sides of the hull from anti-tank rifle projectiles and from splinters. In field conditions they bent and were lost easily, so vehicles routinely ran with only part of the set.

Building and painting tips

With long photo-etched parts flatness decides it. Leave the screens on the fret as long as possible and cut them out only just before gluing, otherwise they will twist while being handled. Flatten a part once cut out on a glass plate by running a smooth metal roller over it, because glass is genuinely flat and a table top usually is not. Glue the hanging rail along the lower edge of the hull and keep checking from the front and from above whether it is parallel; any skew is immediately visible on a long row of plates. If you want to suggest missing or bent screens, make the bend over a cylindrical rod rather than over an edge, so that it looks like a hit rather than a crease. Before painting, degrease the whole thing, spray it with a base and apply rust on the damaged edges only after the main camouflage.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German assault guns and vehicles on the Panzer IV chassis in 1:35 scale.
  • Modelers bothered by the oversized thickness of plastic screens.
  • Anyone interested in a realistic suggestion of wear and missing plates.
  • Those who already have basic experience of cutting out and gluing photo-etched parts.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model of the vehicle, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The designation of the period for the side armor screens hung above the running gear. They were to catch anti-tank rifle projectiles and splinters before they reached the side of the hull.

The scope of the set is not stated here.

Leave them on the fret as long as possible, cut them out only before gluing and flatten any ripple on a glass plate.

They do not. The real vehicles routinely lost some of the plates, so an incomplete or bent set of screens is convincing and looks lively on a model.
