About product

Photo-etched fenders 1:35 for the late-production SU-152 (Voyager Model)

The set holds photo-etched brass fenders and the related small parts for detailing one particular plastic kit, which you will not find in the package and which you have to own separately. Voyager Model is a Chinese manufacturer of photo-etched accessories for military subjects in 1:35 scale.

Flatness of the long parts

Fenders are among the most rewarding photo-etched replacements of all. A plastic fender is several times thicker in scale than real sheet and you can tell at the edge at first glance. Photo-etched brass, by contrast, gives the right thickness and can also be formed, bent and convincingly dented, which cannot be done with plastic. At the same time it is the part that twists most easily: a long strip of brass tends to ripple while it is handled. So glue it in sections on a flat surface, work from one end to the other and keep checking the finished part by looking along the hull against the light. A crooked fender will spoil a model more reliably than a missing detail.

The real subject

The SU-152 was a Soviet heavy self-propelled gun of 1943, built on the chassis of a heavy tank and armed with a 152 mm gun-howitzer in a fixed superstructure with no turret. The late production batch differs from the early ones in a series of hull and external equipment details, among them the configuration of the fenders and the tool stowage.

Building and painting tips

Before gluing, carefully cut the plastic fenders off and level the surface. Degrease the brass, cover it with a primer for metal and paint thinly. It is on fenders in particular that wear down to bare metal pays off most: it is enough to go carefully over an edge with a graphite pencil or to expose the brass with fine abrasive paper, and the effect is more convincing than painted metal. The parts are shaped for the Trumpeter 05568 kit.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet subjects of the Second World War.
  • Modelers who want to remove the most conspicuous weakness of a plastic kit.
  • Anyone after realistic weathering with worn edges.

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not include. The glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Photo-etched brass fenders and the related small parts. You will not find the kit of the vehicle in the package; it has to be bought separately.

Yes, with this kind of replacement the plastic part is removed and the surface leveled so that the photo-etched fender seats.

They are large surfaces that are clearly visible at the edge. The plastic version is markedly oversized in scale and photo-etched parts replace it at the right thickness.

Yes, and it is one of the main advantages. Brass can be carefully formed and damaged the way real sheet would behave.
