An injection-molded plastic kit of the tracked ZSU-23-4 anti-aircraft system in 1:35 scale from Zvezda. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted and is built with ordinary cement for polystyrene. For ground vehicles 1:35 is the most widely used scale, so the model fits without difficulty into dioramas with figures and accessories in the same scale.
The ZSU-23-4, usually known by the name Shilka, is a self-propelled anti-aircraft system on a tracked chassis derived from light artillery tractors. It carries a rotating turret with a four-barrel 23 mm automatic weapon and search and tracking radar housed in the characteristic cylindrical cover at the rear of the turret. The combination of radar, optical sighting and a high rate of fire made it one of the most widely used machines of its category, and it was built in several modernized versions that differ in details of the turret, the instruments and the side covers of the running gear.
Start with the running gear: fit the road wheels and the idler wheels in one plane and let them cure on a flat surface, otherwise the model will not sit down on both tracks. Before fitting the tracks, check their sag between the return rollers. Leave the turret and the barrels until last, as the long thin barrels are the most vulnerable part of the whole model. Spray the whole model with a primer before painting, as a single-color green coat is easily rubbed through on large surfaces during handling without one. Spray the radar cover and the superstructures separately and fit them only once they are finished. Build the weathering up in layers: a dark wash into the pressings and the riveting, then a dry brush on the edges and finally dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower part of the hull. Keep the pigments mainly around the tracks and the fenders and leave the upper surfaces fairly clean.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
