About product

Vallejo Steel (Metallic) 17 ml - the Model Air steel metallic

A metallic acrylic paint from Vallejo out of the Model Air range in a dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml. Model Air is a water-thinnable acrylic developed for the airbrush: it has a thinner consistency than paints meant for the brush and as a rule sprays straight from the bottle, or after being thinned with Vallejo airbrush thinner. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Use

Steel is cooler and darker than aluminum - it has the grayish, hard metallic tone of real steel. It is used anywhere metal is machined, sharpened or polished by service.

  • The blades of knives, bayonets, axes and tools.
  • Tools and equipment on vehicles - shovels, pry bars, chains, hooks.
  • Barrels and metal parts of the armament, where you do not want to go all the way to a dark blue-gray.
  • Polished metal parts - the contact surfaces of tracks, running faces, armor edges.
  • Scuffed places on armor and wear where bare steel plate shows.

How to tell it from neighboring colors

If you need a light, bright metal - the bare aluminum skin of aircraft, panels, wheel hubs - reach for the shade Aluminum, against which Steel is markedly darker and cooler. For the Luftwaffe silver on uncamouflaged and training machines, Silver RLM01 is the one intended. And if you are going a step darker still, into blue-gray - gun barrels, breech blocks, engine parts - use Gunmetal.

Working with metallic paint

  • A metallic paint is not a solution but a suspension - the pigment gradually sinks to the bottom of the bottle and clear binder stays on top. Always stir the bottle thoroughly before drawing any up with the dropper, ideally for several tens of seconds.
  • Steel looks best on a smooth, glossy undercoat. The smoother and more polished the base, the harder and more convincing the metallic sheen; a flat, rough surface kills a metallic paint.
  • A metallic coat tolerates masking and over-spraying badly. Schedule it right at the end, after the other colors - otherwise you will pull it off with tape or cover it over.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of military vehicles and figures who need a realistic steel for equipment and worn places, and for aircraft modelers for exhausts, hinges and metal details.

Ventilate and protect your airways with a respirator when airbrushing. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Steel is the lighter, cool gray steel - sharpened blades, tools, polished and scuffed surfaces. Gunmetal is noticeably darker, toward blue-gray, and suits gun barrels, breech blocks and engine parts. If you want a clearly light metal, reach for the shade Aluminum.

Not necessarily. Model Air is ready to spray and is usually applied straight from the bottle; depending on the nozzle and the pressure it can be thinned further with Vallejo airbrush thinner. It is a water-thinnable acrylic.

Either the paint was not stirred enough (the pigment settles at the bottom), or there is a flat, grainy undercoat beneath it. Metallic paints need a smooth, glossy base and a thoroughly shaken bottle.

It is a modeling paint in a bottle with a volume of 17 ml. It is not a kit.
