An accessory from the maker Artwox Model for the plastic kit of the Russian battleship Poltava in 1:350 scale. It consists of self-adhesive masking sheets with cut-outs matching the deck areas of one particular kit. The model, paints and tools are not in the package. The set is cut for the Zvezda 9060 kit, so check before buying that this is the one you have.
They are meant for the painting stage. You spray the base shade over the whole deck, lay the masks on it once it has cured and spray over with a second tone; once they are off, the boundary stays exactly where the cut-out ends. On older ships with a richly broken-up deck this saves a great deal of fiddly brushwork, where every unevenness of a stroke would show.
What decides is the nature of the base. On a glossy, smooth coat a mask holds well and paint practically never creeps under it. On a matte surface, especially a heavily matted one, adhesion is worse, because the film sits only on the tops of the grain and channels remain between them through which paint wicks. If you are masking the deck after matting, therefore, polish the area with a fine foam sanding pad and press the mask down especially carefully around the whole perimeter. The second safeguard is to spray the edge of the mask first with a thin coat of the base color; any creep then arises in the shade that is meant to be on the deck anyway.
This is not a ship kit. In the package you will find masking sheets and nothing else.
